Episode 1 Commentary

One of the things I had thought about doing since the first episode of Blabber Box went live back in January was if/how I should post the episodes on my own Youtube channel?

The biggest reason would be to share my recent work with those who've followed my old work, but may have not have seen the new films on the Nexon channel. The problem was, I didn't want to upload a duplicate of the film to compete with the first upload. I decided to solve that problem by overdubbing the episodes with dull and boring commentary =)

This first episode is a bit longer and offers undeniable proof why animations should remain behind the camera unseen =). I also spent most of the time dwelling on the "why." Most notably, Why did I accept to make this series?

While episodes 1-5 are available on the Nexon channel right now, I'll be uploading these commentaries every two weeks until we are caught up. Future conversations I would like to expand on are how I make the episodes, how did I develop and cast the characters, and what are those morals/lessons that I keep talking about?

Keep an eye out and thanks for watching!

  1. Dear Brian,
Great fan of your work/insight into the gaming community. Though, I would love to talk to you abit about other gaming communities besides the MMO scene, though there shouldn't be much to talk about anymore because you are pretty much spot on, how it really is.
I would love to share stories, talk and banter over the starcraft community with you. Myself being a older gamer, blowing through many "community" scenes if you can call it that, the starcraft one blow my mind away, and i love how it dips into a real life form that wants to reach out into the common community.
Much to share, only if you really want more insight on what other communities are like
    Chao,
    Kevin

  2. What little I know is that in Asia, Starcraft is a bit more than a little scene. I'm surprised they didn't petition it to be included in the Olympics =)

Certainly communities exist around non MMO games. Pokemon comes to mind as having a dedicated community between 'digital game battlers', 'card game battlers,' 'fan fic artists/writers,' 'cosplayers' etc... In my opinion, anything that goes from passive consuming (just playing the game) to active in-person creation (writing and art, group events, face-to-face social connecting) is 1000x better.

I think my major argument is creation vs. consumption. To many online games are more passive consumption than active participation.

  3. Hey, you don't know me but im a mapler and i remember seeing your first newgrounds video years and years ago when I was a kid, after which I quit maple for years and now I started a little playing again (15 years now lvl 125 =P) and once again searched newgrounds for your video for the old memories and laughs i then noticed that you now actually create a series for nexon with a vital message, I heard your commentary and your view and I think what you say is really great and makes alot of
sense, so congratulations on your success and goodluck in the futre. (Sorry for the bad grammer wrote this in kind of a hurry) =)

Also, just a question *if you know* about big bang patch that reconstructed mapelstory quite a bit and its effect on maplestory such as making leveling easier that gives the user opportunities to experience more features (training spots/ quests) but also makes the effort less rewarding (kind of) and edits/deletes the maps old maplers had so many memories with...what is your opinion on it?

  4. Great commentary. I had to rewatch your 'the only thing+response I know' again. The whole online community can be pretty harsh. For example, I just watched a video on youtube where a boy won the audition to be featured in 'the annoying orange'. People that leave comments on his video are full of rage, anger, jealousy and they say the worst things about him. That is really heartbreaking. We come from the generation that grew up with the new media, but most of us got into the online world when we were old enough. Society changes though and young children come online on games and video sharing websites for innocent entertainment. I think people should be more educated online. Online bullying is growing bigger and bigger. The impact it has on the victims is much bigger. Even if you change only 1 person's mind by the message. At least it's an achievement.

I support your work all the way. I just had to write something here again. Sorry if it's too long.

    Greetings,

    Marin
